Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES)

This micro-learning course aims to enable school personnel working with children to understand Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the effects of trauma on children. It will provide an overview of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their impact on students' psychosocial functioning and well-being in our public schools. School and community-level strategies will be presented to support students, families, and school personnel.

A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion that may be used to satisfy Professional Development requirements.(Estimate 20 minutes) 

Annual Emergency Glucagon Administration Training for Unlicensed School Personnel

The New York State Education Department approved training must be used when training unlicensed school personnel to administer prescribed emergency glucagon to a student with written parent/guardian consent pursuant to Education Law Article 19, section 921, and Commissioner's Regulation 136.7. By committing to this training, you are helping to ensure that diabetic students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

• To complete this training, you must download and print the Glucagon Skills Checklist and the Certificate of Completion. Bring these documents to the school nurse (RN) or the licensed health professional (NP, PA, Physician) conducting the second part of this training. 
• When you have completed the second part of the training, the school nurse or the licensed health professional will sign both documents indicating that you have successfully completed the Annual Emergency Glucagon Administration Training for Unlicensed School Personnel.
• This course certificate is valid for one year after successful completion of all components.

Forty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Asthma Management in Schools
Poorly controlled asthma may impact school attendance and affect academic performance. This course will provide an overview of current clinical guidance, medications and delivery, Asthma Action Plans (AAP), and strategies for effective parent/guardian collaboration and communication. Do you want to reduce frustration and increase your confidence using the computer and the internet? This micro-learning course will help you learn how to download, print, and save files, use the CTRL key to save time when performing routine tasks, and navigate the internet safely. Thirty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Continuous Glucose Monitors & Insulin Pumps
Diabetes is a life-altering diagnosis for students and their families. The school nurse is key to providing the education and care that supports student's safety and success in the school setting. To assist school nurses and provide safe, effective care for students with diabetes, we have provided a one-hour Zoom webinar presentation on Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) and Insulin Pump. One hour of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Creating an HIV Free Generation
While the number of HIV transmissions has declined, 20% of all new infections occur in young people 13-24. This age group is also less likely to get tested or to remain in treatment. This course provides school staff with information on the current state of HIV transmission, treatment, and prevention and the rights of youth to obtain testing and treatment. Forty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Creating LBGT Inclusive Schools
What are the experiences of LGBT students and families in your classroom and school? This course will provide you with an overview of issues faced by LGBT youth and resources that will help you to evaluate your school’s climate and ensure LGBT youth and families are supported. Thirty-five minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Drug Awareness Training for School Personnel
This presentation is designed to provide school personnel with a basic overview of what to look for regarding signs and symptoms of possible impairment and to understand the appropriate next steps in a school setting. This presentation will provide the tools to determine if further assessment, evaluation, and possible treatment are needed by an appropriate healthcare provider. Two hours and thirty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

E-Cigarettes and Vaping
E-Cigarette use poses a significant and avoidable health risk to young people, yet 6 out of 10 teens believe that e-cigarettes cause little or only some harm. This course will explore teen beliefs, usage trends, and marketing. This course will also provide curriculum resources and strategies to prevent and reduce use for youth and families. Forty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Human Trafficking Awareness Training For School Personnel
This presentation will provide information for school personnel which will increase awareness and understanding of human trafficking and help school personnel recognize warning signs of youth who may be victims of human trafficking, what to do if human trafficking is suspected, and resources for assisting victims of trafficking. This presentation will define human trafficking, recruitment, identify risk factors and indicators of human trafficking. Information regarding the increased risks of substance use disorder, sexually transmitted infections, and impact on learning for trafficked youth will also be shared. Two hours and thirty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Mandated NYS School Health Education Instruction
Meeting New York State (NYS) education requirements for school health education instruction can be challenging. This micro-course will provide information on which health education curriculum topics are mandated and which are recommended by the NYS Education Department. In addition, it will provide an overview of who needs to teach health education content by grade. Resources and links to the laws and regulations governing school health education instruction in NYS are provided. Twenty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Medication Management in the School Setting
Students may need medication during school hours to fully participate in their education program. This includes medications medically necessary to be taken at school or school-sponsored activities and NOT those that can be taken outside the school day.
This narrated webinar aligns with the NYSED Guidelines for Medication Management in Schools. It provides a framework for schools to develop policies and procedures for medication administration in all schools as defined in NYS law. Once completed and a post-knowledge check passed with an 80%, a certificate of completion will be provided for professional development credit. Forty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Opioid Overdose Prevention Training
Opioid abuse is a national public health issue. A timely response to opioid overdose can save lives. This NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH) approved webinar provides training for NYS schools choosing to implement Opioid Overdose Prevention and allow naloxone administration by school staff who are not medical professionals. It has been approved under section 3309 of Public Health Law for Opioid Overdose Prevention Training.

After successful completion of this training, the learner will receive a certificate of training in opioid overdose prevention, valid for two years.  The NYSED strongly encourages an annual review to ensure that understanding and skills in opioid overdose response are current and timely. Therefore, the course will be available for your periodic review. Two years after successfully competing, you will be re-enrolled in the Opioid Prevention course. Thirty-five minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Opioids and the Drug Overdose Crisis
This course covers current drug trends, how they relate to adolescents, and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) response to the crisis. This course also reviews NYS Education Department (NYSED) and NYS Public Health Laws and Regulations and how schools can become a registered Opioid Overdose Prevention Program.

In this course, you will learn about sleep disorders in students that can impact all ages and may be extremely difficult to detect. The consequences of these disorders on students’ health, learning, and wellness are incalculable. 

This course will help you understand sleep as a process in students and help you recognize and educate on common sleep disorders.

A certificate will be awarded upon successful completion that may be used to satisfy Professional Development requirements.(Estimate 20 minutes) 

This presentation will assist school nurses with getting the health office and school year up and running and off to a good start. The information provided will help school nurses become familiar with the most frequently used resources and where to find them. (approx. 45 mins)

This micro-course provides information about preventing Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) before it happens through recognition of personal risks, family history risk factors, and signs and symptoms. It will also review New York State Education Department (NYSED) Laws and Regulations, what schools need to know and do in relation to the Dominic Murray Act, and available school resources. (Estimate 20 minutes)

Suicide Safety Prevention Awareness
Youth suicide can be prevented. Understanding the signs of students at-risk and knowing the school action plan allows school staff to be able to provide critical support when it is needed. This course provides an overview of Suicide Safety Prevention Awareness Training (SST) which is one of many school-based suicide prevention offerings of the Suicide Prevention Center of New York (SPCNY) funded through the New York State Office of Mental Health. Forty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Supporting Healthy Teen Relationships
This self-paced webinar will explore healthy and unhealthy relationships, what they are, and how to recognize the differences. It will define the role of school staff, including teachers and nurses, in helping to support healthy relationships among students in a school setting. Resources and best practices will be shared. This webinar only contains audio in the video segments. Thirty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

The Impact of Domestic Violence on Children 
Children and youth who are exposed to domestic violence experience negative emotional, mental, and cognitive development that impacts their future wellness. To positively respond to the overwhelming issues associated with domestic violence, school professionals need to understand these issues and know how to identify, assess, and provide appropriate support to children and youth affected by domestic violence. This course frames domestic and intimate partner violence in terms of its impact on children and youth and outlines strategies that school staff can use to support students and families affected by violence. Twenty-five minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

The Impact of STIs on NYS Youth
While sexually transmitted infections (STIs) affect individuals of all ages, STIs take a particularly heavy toll on youth. The CDC estimates that youth ages 15-24 account for almost 50% of new sexually transmitted infections that occurred in the United States in 2018. This course will reveal the increase and implications of STIs on school-aged students and the evidence-based tools to help school health providers support students. Thirty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Ticks and Tickborne Disease: Prevention is Key
This micro-learning course aims to provide education on Ticks and Tickborne disease, including indicators for follow-up with a healthcare provider. The original presentation was created in consultation with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
This updated course was created using resources from the NYSDOH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Thirty minutes of PD credit are awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Trauma-Informed Care in School
Children’s positive experiences or protective factors can prevent them from experiencing adversity and can protect against many of the negative health and life outcomes even after adversity has occurred. This presentation shares information about the Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) Survey and how ACES and trauma relate to health and learning.  Addressing conditions that put children and families at risk of ACEs is important so that we can prevent ACEs before they happen. Thirty-five minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

Trends in STIs & HIV in NYS Youth
Sexually active youth are at increased risk for HIV and STIs as compared to older adults. The rate of sexually transmitted infections has continued to increase with 30,000 NYS teens diagnosed with chlamydia each year. This course will provide an overview of the current prevalence of HIV/STIs in NYS school-age youth, barriers to care, and prevention and education strategies. Thirty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.

2022 Updates- A Comprehensive School Health Resource
This micro-learning course will give you an overview of how the NYSCSH staff can support the School Health Professional. You will also learn the specific roles of Medical Directors, RNs, and LPNs and the administration of medications in the school setting. NYSED School Health Services Guideline 2022 updates are also explored. Twenty minutes of PD credit is awarded upon successful completion of this course.
