Suicide Safety Prevention Awareness for School Staff
This seminar will be provided in two parts. A recorded presentation providing background information on the topic will be followed with a Zoom discussion where participants can ask follow-up questions on how to implement what you've learned, find out how to request on-site or virtual training for your school, and ask relevant questions of our expert presenter.
Step1 Suicide Safety Prevention Awareness for School Staff webinar available in the NYSCSH Learning Management System (LMS). Access the LMS here.
This presentation affirms that school staff are often the first to recognize that a student may be struggling. As members of a school community, we are all challenged to recognize and respond when suicide risk may be a part of what is going on for a student. This session will include information on the importance of youth suicide prevention efforts in school, characteristics of at-risk students, the importance of having clear and supportive building referral procedures, and identifying school, community, and NYSCSH resources for youth suicide prevention. This presentation was created in collaboration with the Suicide Prevention Center of New York (SPCNY), operated by the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene with funding from the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). The deadline to watch the webinar to receive the Zoom Seminar invitation is 12/14/20.
Step 2 Respond to the Zoom Invitation
You will receive a Zoom invitation within 24 hours of completing the webinar. Choose your preferred date to attend the live Virtual Seminar. The deadline to choose your date of Seminar attendance is 12/14/20. (12/16/20 for attendance the 12/17/20 discussion)
Step 3 Zoom Chat with Pat Breux 3:30-4:30 on Tuesday or 12/15 and Thursday 12/17
After watching the webinar, you will automatically receive an invite to join NYSCSH and our expert presenter Pat Breux in a Zoom meeting on the impact of COVID on NYS students health and learning from 3:30-4:30 on Tuesday or 12/15 and Thursday 12/17 to learn how COVID and the trauma affect children and their families and how schools can help. 1 hour of PD/CTLE credit is awarded upon successful completion.
Questions that will be addressed include:
- What has been the impact of COVID on youth suicide?
- Which students should we be most concerned about?
- How do we recognize and support a student who is learning remotely that may be at risk for suicide?
- What should I do if I don’t know how to find my school’s referral procedures?
