The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) is a federal law that many of us are familiar with from doctor’s offices. HIPAA requires appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of protected health information (PHI) and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information by covered entities without an individual’s authorization.  It also ensures access to PHI by the patient.
