Resources for School Meals

Action for Healthy Kids NY
Provides resources, live and online training, and information on grants to support school wellness and improve the health of NYS students. Resources include support in creating wellness policies, Breakfast in the Classroom, and other programs.

Breakfast in the Classroom: National Education Association (NEA)
Provides multiple resources for schools and is supported by the School Nutrition Foundation.   

No Kid Hungry - New York
This coalition provides multiple resources and links for school and health professionals, parents, and students from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Academy of Pediatrics, Food Action Center, Dairy Farming Today, Dairy Management Inc, Got Milk, Hunger Solutions NY, MyPlate, NYS Academy of Family Physician, National Medical Association, NYSED's Think Breakfast, NYS School Nutrition Association, NYS Dietetic Association, and USDA Breakfast.  

Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) Healthy School Meals for All

FRAC School Breakfast Program
Provides resources and data on School Breakfast Eligibility Infographics and Charts, Expanding School Breakfast Participation, School Breakfast Outreach, and   School Breakfast State/Local Data Report Toolkit, and the impact of breakfast on learning.

Nutrition Standards in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs
Provides an overview of the final rule and additional resources for school health professionals, including a PowerPoint presentation.  

School Breakfast Program
Provides cash assistance to states to operate nonprofit breakfast programs in schools and residential childcare institutions. The Food and Nutrition service administers the SBP at the Federal level. State education agencies administer the SBP at the state level, and local school food authorities operate the Program in schools.

Dietary Guidelines for Americans (Health .gov)
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage individuals to eat a healthful diet — one that focuses on foods and beverages that help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, promote health, and prevent chronic disease. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) jointly publish the Dietary Guidelines every 5 years. 

CDC Dietary Statistics
Nutrition Statistics (CDC-Division of Adolescent and School Health)-Provides an overview and statistics on the nutrition and health of young people. 

CDC School Health Guidelines to Promote Healthy Eating and Physical Activity
Developed in collaboration with nutrition and physical activity experts across the nation, the Guidelines identify the most effective policies and practices schools can implement to help young people adopt and maintain healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle.

School Nutrition Association
A national, nonprofit professional organization representing school nutrition professionals across the country. They provide many resources and programs, such as Breakfast in the Classroom, School Food Equipment Grants, Sanitation, Food Safety and Employee Safety, and Local Wellness Policies.  

Food Insecurity/Hunger

Map the Meal Gap, Food Insecurity in your County
Provides facts on hunger (Food Insecurity) by county in NYS. The site provides information and resources on child hunger and food banks. 

USDA National Hunger Hotline
This website provides food assistance and other nutrition and social services information, serving as an important tool in combating hunger and promoting economic mobility. 

Physical Activity & Nutrition

Fuel Up to Play 60
National Dairy Council® (NDC), National Football League (NFL), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture team up to encourage youth to eat healthily and move more. Adults and students work together to implement school-improving changes that best meet their school's wellness goals.  

Team Nutrition
An initiative of the USDA Food and Nutrition Service that provides training, technical assistance, and free materials for nutrition education to support healthy eating and physical activity. 

My Plate
Team Nutrition provides MyPlate materials that are developed specifically for kids and their parents/caregivers. We also offer evidence-based curricula that educators can use to integrate MyPlate lessons into core educational subjects, such as Math, English Language Arts, and Science. Schools, summer sites, and child care (centers, homes, and sponsors) that participate in USDA’s Child Nutrition Programs may request free printed copies of many of these materials.

Presidential Youth Fitness Program
Amid all the school closures due to COVID-19, there is a way that parents can encourage their kids to exercise at home with their families, including exercise video tutorials. The goal is to give families an opportunity to keep healthy in a time when it is difficult to do so.

CDC Healthy Schools Classroom Physical Activity
Integrating physical activity into academic instruction to help increase the students' concentration and ability to stay on-task in the classroom and improve their motivation and engagement in the learning process.
