In this webinar and associated resources, Dr. Lisa Horowitz of the National Institute of Mental Health and Dr. Jeff Bridge of Nationwide Children’s Hospital provided background data on suicide and suicidal behavior among youth and young adults and discussed suicide prevention research in screening in both medical and school settings.

Concussion

Concussion Training Courses

School nurses, certified athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and coaches are required to complete a NYSED-approved concussion training course every 2 years. The courses offered by the CDC are available in multiple languages.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers the CDC Train Learning Network, a comprehensive national training program. Users must sign up for an account to access trainings.

Note: The courses listed below are national training courses. Therefore, what unlicensed school personnel are permitted to do and the scope of practice of certified athletic trainers and school nurses in NYS may differ from what is described in the training. School personnel and licensed or certified health professionals in NYS must follow NYS laws and regulations.

School Nurses

HEADS UP to Healthcare Providers Online Training for School Nurses (1 hour)
This course is NYSED-approved for school nurses and must be completed every two years.

Certified Athletic Trainers

Certified Athletic Trainers can choose from either of NYSED-approved concussion training courses below:

Coaches and PE teachers can choose from either of the NYSED-approved concussion training courses below:

HEADS UP to Youth Sports: Online Training for Coaches (45 minutes)
This CDC course is NYSED-approved for coaches and PE teachers and must be completed every two years.
Concussion in Sports Course (1 hour)
This course from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is NYSED-approved for coaches and PE teachers and must be completed every two years. Available in English and Spanish.

School Professionals

HEADS UP to Schools: Online Concussion Training for School Professionals
This CDC course empowers the learner you to better support students recovering from concussion through understanding, monitoring, and accommodating their individual needs.
Return to Learn: A Guide for School Professionals
This course from the Children's Hospital of Chicago provides guidance on how to integrate children and teens back into school following concussion.
