There are differences in the Federal and State laws, rules, and regulations that impact health services in schools.  The New York State Education Department (NYSED) encourages all Coordinated School Health Team Members to utilize the NYSCSH as a resource to receive current, accurate, evidence-based information on health education and health services regulations, guidance, and best practices.

The New York State Center for School Health (NYSCSH or the Center) is here to support you. We are a contract technical assistance center for the NYSED Office of Student Support Services, providing comprehensive resources for school nurses, medical directors, and all allied school health professionals.  

The memo, Medical Director and School Nurse Role (NYSED 11/2022), provides information on the requirements of NYS public schools to employ a Director of School Health Services (Medical Director), their specific role in schools, and reviews the requirements and role of a school nurse. A medical director must be a NYS licensed physician or nurse practitioner (NP).

Sample Director of School Health Services Delegation Authorization (NYSCSH 10/2025) 
A medical director may choose to delegate some of their responsibilities and tasks, including but not limited to, reviewing health certificates, hearing/vision/scoliosis screenings, concussion clearance, and interval health history for athletics to the school nurse (RN). NYSED recommends delegation be in writing to avoid misunderstandings and creates consistency for all nurses employed by a school/district.

The following webinars are recommended to help in the transition to school nursing. Both are located on our Professional Learning page. To enroll in a course in our Learning Management System (LMS), you must first create an account. The system tracks your learning and will notify you when (or if) your training is up for renewal.

• Something Old, Something New for Health Professionals -This presentation will assist school nurses in getting the health office and the school year up and running and off to a good start. The information provided will help school nurses become familiar with the most frequently used resources and where to find them. (Approx. 45 mins) This webinar provides an excellent overview.
• Medication Management in the School Setting - This narrated webinar aligns with the NYSED Guidelines for Medication Management in Schools. It provides a framework for schools to develop policies and procedures for medication administration in all schools as defined in NYS law. Once completed and a post-knowledge check is passed with a score of 80%, a certificate of completion will be provided for professional development credit. (approx. 40 mins). This webinar provides an excellent overview.
